God’s Covenant With Noah

I had a dream about a month ago. My mum and I were in a really huge house when it began to rain. It rained and rained until the whole area around us began to flood. Most people in this house began to panic and leave; we also decided to leave. As we left the house, we could see the water from the sea close by rising up to meet the large house. We walked very quickly in order to escape the flood.

We walked out into the street to find lots of other people, seeking refuge from the flood. Most looked very distressed and feared for their lives. As we sought shelter we didn’t really say too much to one another. And then I woke up.

The first thoughts that came to my mind when I woke up was that I needed to look for the scripture in the Bible when God made a covenant with Moses that He would not destroy the earth again by water. As I looked through Genesis I found the scripture. However, I also made a new discovery, which brought an additional dimension to my dream and some of the thoughts I have been having recently. The scripture where God makes His covenant with Moses is found in Genesis 9:11.

Could the reference to 9:11 have any significance to us as Christians? I say…hold on to that thought because in the last days people will seek to deceive people, even God’s elect. We need to seek God’s face and make sure that we read the Word of God so that we know the truth and our faith in God is able to withstand what is to come.

Lamenting for Others Through Prayer

I have been praying with passion and determination for the salvation of my friends and family over the past few months. Sometimes this has been extremely distressing for me because I have been desperately expecting my prayers to be answered immediately.

So, you can imagine my surprise this morning when my email devotional was about the very topic that has been causing me so much distress and frustration over the past few months. The scripture was taken from Psalm 83 and it was a prayer to God for those who do not know Him. The writer stresses that we should stop trying to do God’s job for Him but that it is only through prayer that God will do what humans cannot do.

It made me realise that whilst I have been so passionate about spreading the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord, I have also been trying to do what no human can do and that is save the souls of our fellow humans. The advice given is simply to continue to pray for those around us and by spending time in prayer, lamenting, God our Father, who hears our prayers is the only One who can save.

Psalm 83: 18 is the suggested scripture that is used as a prayer to help those who do not yet know Jesus as Saviour and Lord:

18 Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD - that you alone are the Most High over all the earth, supreme over all the earth.

God’s Promises

One of my favourite scriptures can be found in Mark Chapter 11 verses 22-26:  And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.  Verse 24:  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 

We know that with God all things are possible (Mark 10 verse 27).  There are just some things that we do not understand and when so-called barriers appear to stand in our way, God is in control; He has a plan for us and we are to:  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and not lean not unto thine own understanding. (Proverbs 3 verse 5).  God does not want us to reason, think on, ponder or work out difficult situations for ourselves.  He wants us to trust Him in the knowledge that, as Jesus said in St John 14 verse 6:  “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”.

The most amazing thing about this scripture for me is that I had become interested in philosophy, and in particular the branch of moral philosophy.  Truth as a concept can be viewed in different ways depending on your perspective or philosophical position.  I read documents and articles that ask the question ‘What is truth?’.  Now looking back I have to laugh at myself, what was I thinking?  There should be no other search for the truth when the Bible clearly tells us that Jesus is the truth. If you get to know him, through the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then our searching for the truth should cease!

So, armed with the knowledge that God wants us to trust Him and that Jesus said he is the way, the truth and the life, and that: No one comes to the Father except through me: Why should we worry?
